How a Butler Matrix Works

A Butler Matrix is a passive beamforming network with N inputs and N outputs (typically N = 4 or 8). Each input port generates a different progressive phase distribution across all output ports, which - when fed into an antenna array - creates a different beam direction. Switching between inputs effectively steers the beam without active phase shifters, making the Butler Matrix the simplest and most stable architecture for multi-beam antenna systems.
